1. Start with the basics
While decorating can be fun, especially in a kid’s room, it is easy to go overboard. A bed, a desk, and a wardrobe in neutral or wood tones make for a good base. You can make changes to the décor as your child grows older.
2. Experiment with colour
Children at this age may still be indecisive, with their favourite colour changing often. To incorporate their changing tastes, opt for less permanent ways to add a pop of colour to their room’s interiors. All the while, maintain a neutral base that’ll highlight all the other colours. Changing the bedding and the draperies to the colour of the month is easy enough. Painting the shelves in vibrant colours, peel-and-stick wallpaper, decals, etc., are also great ways to introduce accent colours.
3. Create well-defined zones
Children’s rooms are usually multifunctional spaces — play, study, and sleeping areas all in one space. With clearly demarcated zones, children will be better able to compartmentalize. There are a couple of different ways you can do it. You can use anchoring elements such as area rugs and different wall décor as indicators. Task lighting for each zone in addition to ambient lighting will also help.
4. A little nook to wind down
Children also appreciate a little nook to wind down in privacy. Start with establishing comfortable seating. A rocking chair, a swing chair, or even floor seating are great starting points. Add a couple of pillows and a warm throw blanket will add finishing touches. If your little one has the flair for the dramatics, you can design this nook with a canopy flowing down from the ceiling or as a tent!
5. Creative outlet
Children need creative outlets— it can be in the form of a play area, art space, a library, etc. Incorporating one of these in their room will go a long way. Start with something simple like a table and a chair. And as the child grows, you can turn it into a full-sized study. Remember, to make it accessible to children, design these spaces to be child-friendly in terms of size, materials, etc.
6. Involve your child in the process
From colour options to layouts to picking textile, include your child in each step of the process. As a result, they will have a room that they love and you can ensure that all their needs are met.
